Studying abroad in Barcelona is unforgettable – it’s actually one of the best places to study sustainably abroad without even trying. With simple choices, you can reduce your footprint while exploring like a local. Let’s be real, being eco-conscious is something that can go over our head with all the excitement of being abroad. What if I told you that you’re probably already doing it!
Tip #1: Bring or Buy a Reusable Bag

While exploring the city, I quickly noticed many locals carrying a green and yellow reusable bag from Mercadona – a popular grocery store that I discovered on TikTok, which has the popular reusable bag. A lot of grocery stores offer reusable bags that will make it practical to carry your items and study sustainably abroad. Even if you don’t buy the well-known Mercadona bag, reusable bags are easy to find throughout the city.
Using one not only helps you carry groceries more comfortably, but it also saves money and reduces unnecessary plastic waste. So, whether you bring one from home or purchase one here, trust me – it will make your daily errands much easier and more sustainable. I will definitely be taking mine home.
Tip #2: Bring a Reusable Water Bottle

Save another coin by not wasting money on buying water bottles from stores. It has saved me from not constantly wasting money on single-use plastic water bottles. I brought the same bottle from home that I normally use at the gym, and it’s been perfect for daily use. Many apartments in Barcelona also have water filters, which makes refilling convenient and affordable. You can also find a filtered water sink inside ALBA’s kitchen where you can refill during class.
I will say that I have refilled my water at the famous Font de Canaletes in Las Ramblas. Which is a water fountain that the FC Barcelona fans drink from to celebrate their victories. I’ve even refilled my water bottle during the Medieval Girona excursion with no issues.
If you prefer extra peace of mind, you can bring a filtered water bottle, but a regular one works just fine. Either way, staying hydrated doesn’t need to cost you a cent, or create more plastic waste.
Additional Sustainable Lifestyle Practices in Barcelona
Since being here in Barcelona, you will naturally take part in many sustainable practices, even if you don’t plan to. You will be walking a lot, which is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. As another student noted in ALBA’s full academic year guide, living here really encourages exploring on foot – it’s one of the easiest ways to get to know the city while staying active and sustainable.
While you’re walking, you’ll likely do some shopping, and there are plenty of opportunities for second-hand thrifting. You can also explore local second-hand stores throughout the city. One really unique place worth visiting is Mercat dels Encants, a cultural treasure full of second-hand finds and hidden gems. It’s definitely a must-see while staying in Barcelona and a great example of local sustainable shopping.
Another common sustainable practice in Barcelona is skipping the dryer. Instead of using extra energy, you’ll find yourself naturally air-drying your clothes using hanging racks.
And lastly, remember that your carbon footprint matters. Traveling while abroad is exciting, but try to stay mindful of how often and how far you travel.

Before You Go…
These habits have made my experience in Barcelona more meaningful, and I hope they help you too. Sustainability here is not just a trend, it’s part of daily life, and it’s a part of Barcelona’s DNA. According to the city’s Citizen Commitment for a More Sustainable Barcelona embracing these practices isn’t just good for the planet, it’s part of truly experiencing the city like a local and committing to its sustainability culture for yourself.
Enjoy your time in Barcelona sustainably and remember these simple habits not only reduce your footprint but also make your experience more easy and meaningful. Every small step helps you study sustainably abroad with ease.
