“Pa amb Tomàquet” or bread with tomato

  • 8 slices of country style bread or baguette (not sliced loaf bread!)
  • 2 tomatoes
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove cut in half. Fingers get less garlicy if peel is left on
  • Salt (optional)


  1. Toast the slices of bread in the toaster.
  2. Rub the cut garlic clove on the bread.
  3. Cut the tomato in half and rub over the slice of bread.
  4. Drizzle a little olive oil and add a dash of salt.

• In Catalonia, the favorite bread is el pan de payés (rustic bread).


• In Catalonia, the tomato used for preparing el pa amb tomàquet is always the variety called tomàquet that means “hanging tomatoes”. These tomatoes are very popular in Catalonia and Valencia


• Pa amb tomàquet is not popular all over Spain. Just few regions eat it on a daily base: Catalonia, Valencia, and Murcia.
